The Art of Clockmaking

Clocks are storytellers.  They mark the importance of an hour when an event occurred, such as the birth of your first-born child.  They chime their melancholic music of time passing by, which makes us remember our loved ones, and they are a beauiful addition to your family legacy, to be passsed down from generation to generation.  In fact, clocks are not only storytellers, they are memory makers.

Meet ... GUY LUCK

Blacksmith |  Artist | Clockmaker

"Patience & Diligence"

Guy was not always a clockmaker.  In fact, he originally trainedand worked as a geologist, and then spent the next thirty five years of his life working as a blacksmith, using the old traditional skills for making ornamental gates, railings, balustades, and such like.

Much of his blacksmith work involved making the ironwork needed or the restoration of old Cape Dutch buildings, as well as new ones.  Early on in his career, Guy took up model engineering and ultimately built three 5" gauge live steam locomotives.  He was involved with the miniature railway club in Plettenberg Bay where he ran these locomotives.

Upon his relocation to Cape Town, Guy moved into a much smaller workshop and there he tried his hand at clockmaking.  This then became a passion and he never looked back.  Guy's inspiration came from the well-known English Horogolist, John Wilding, among others.  He has since made about thirty clocks, of all types, including Regulators, Long-case Clocks, Skeleton Clocks and even, some electric Clocks.

His recent clocks are this own design.  Guy uses stainless steel for the frames, instead of the more traditional brass.  This gives the clocks a more contemporary look and feel.  All the working parts are made entirely by Guy, and the attention to detail and careful craftsmanship is clearly demonstrated in his work.  His clocks take months to build.

The are unique, exquisitely hand-crafted and will elegantly enhance any space.  As well as being functional, they will also be valuable family heirlooms for generations to come.
